College Scholarships

At Navigation Academy, we aim to go above and beyond other college consulting services by working with schools to identify college scholarships that might be right for you.

Different types of Scholarships

There are many different types of scholarships that may be based either on merit or on financial need, though they are all considered a form of “gift aid.” If you can show exceptional academic achievement, you might pursue a merit-based scholarship. It may be an option if you have skills and interests that set you apart from other applicants. You can also get an athletic scholarship, or a scholarship for outstanding community service. There are even essay and poetry competitions out there that offer college scholarship money as a reward.

Scholarship Conditions

When you receive a scholarship, you typically don’t need to pay the money back. Many scholarship providers, though, may impose certain conditions when they offer you money. To keep your scholarship, you’ll probably have to maintain a certain grade point average. You also might need to return the money if you withdraw from school. Although scholarships do come with some caveats, they are different from loans, which require you to pay the money back over time. Unlike grants, which are also a form of gift aid, scholarships tend to be merit-based. While grants are typically distributed on the basis of financial need.

Start looking for scholarships early.

As is the case with college testing and standard financial aid, it’s important to start looking for scholarships early on in the college application process. This will give you plenty of time to meet deadlines. We’ll make sure you’re familiar with the deadlines for the scholarships you apply for, and we will also work with you to help you meet those deadlines. Different states have different deadlines for financial aid applications, but many of the more prestigious schools have early deadlines.
