Types of Student Loans

There are various types of financial aid available to college-bound students. Student Loans are a form of financial aid. Paying for college can be a stressful and often confusing venture. A college education is often the second largest investment (next to purchasing a house) in a person’s life.

College student loans may come from the federal government, state government, and your school or a private organization.

With each, the general idea is the same. You may be able to borrow money to pay your tuition, but you need to agree to pay interest over time on that loan. It’s important to note that student loans are different from college scholarships or grant money. Scholarships and grants are free money, as long as you maintain a certain GPA or academic performance. With loans, you are borrowing the money.

Loan Repayment

Most student loans don’t require you to start repaying them until after you’ve left school, or when you drop below full-time enrollment. PLUS loans are the exception; the repayment timeline for these loans kicks in as soon as the loan is fully disbursed. Some PLUS loans like the Direct loans will allow you to defer payment.

Your lender or loan servicer will provide you with a loan repayment schedule indicating the due date of your first payment. It will also include the expected number, amount and frequency of payments.¹ Some loans may give you a grace period shortly after you leave school, though interest typically still accrues on your loan during that time.
